In 2013, legendary muralist Robert Vargas painted "Our Lady of DTLA" at the corner of 6th and Spring Street. The giant mural spans two corners and features a large portrait of a beautiful woman overlooking the passersby. As Robert explained in this 2017 Instagram post, he actually brought the model for the painting up with him in the lift to paint her live.

2013 is also the same year that Los Angeles repealed its misguided decade-long ban on public murals, although it didn't stop Vargas from painting this mural months earlier. A public proponent of the repeal, Vargas said at the time, "An artist has an ability to shape the way a city’s history is written. That’s what I intend to do."
