Description
A striking and fantastical portrait titled "Dapper Dandy" adorns the side of the Plan Check restaurant in Sawtelle*. It's a piece from California-based artist David Gilmore and appears to be part of an ongoing "Dapper Dandy" series. As he explains on Instagram:
This is the first time one of my dapper dandies has gotten the mural treatment as they’ve previously all been on paper or canvas. I started this series about three years ago where I wanted to do a twist on classic Victorian portraiture. The paintings of that time period are rather stoic so expanding from a traditional pose, I exaggerated their features, had their hair with vivid colors, and made a pattern on their skin. I had hoped an unusual dapper dandy with blue hair and a magenta suit would appeal to the folks at Plan Check, and fortunately, it caught their interest.
And it's caught the interest of passersby sense. Check out the post below to see a video from when the mural was first completed.

*Technically, according to Eric Brightwell's incredible neighborhood map which his the definitive source we use at LA Mural Map to categorize murals by neighborhood, both the mural and the restaurant rests right on the border of the Sawtelle and Little Osaka neighborhoods.
